From Conversation to Action: How Claude's Skills and CoWork Capabilities Are Redefining AI

When the stock prices of major software companies drop because one AI model released an update, that is not market noise - it is recognition. The market is identifying a deep paradigm shift, and Claude is at its center.

I had promised to cover a different tool each week, but the turbulence we recently saw in the markets - with billions of dollars wiped from the valuations of traditional software companies - forced me to bring Claude back into the conversation. This time, it is no longer just about "smart writing." It is about an active partner that is changing the rules of the game inside the law firm.

 

I believe this is a pendulum, not a cliff. Replacing complex enterprise systems is not simple, and existing vendors will continue to improve their tools. But this move proves once again that Claude is in a league of its own when it comes to leading the market.

At the heart of this shift is the ability to perform independent actions through Claude CoWork. It is now possible to work directly inside Excel and PowerPoint, which fundamentally changes the way we interact with those tools. Beyond that, Claude's highly valuable Skills capability is being harnessed to create dedicated features for specific practice areas - including the newly launched Legal Plugin, whose release sent stocks like Thomson Reuters into a sharp decline.

While the tasks currently defined within the Plugin are foundational and the outputs are not yet perfect, the direction is unambiguous: Anthropic is leading on innovation and taking Claude several steps forward toward a model with built-in, sophisticated execution and analysis capabilities.

The combination of Claude's established depth of analysis with the ability to take active, autonomous action is precisely what will allow us to remove the repetitive work from our desks entirely and focus on what actually matters: our professional judgment.

 

The first generation of AI taught us to ask better questions. The next generation - the one Claude is already leading - is learning to act. For lawyers, the difference between "conversing" and "executing" is the difference between a support tool and a genuine strategic partner.
